Organized in the year 1823, Marion County was named in the honor of Francis Marion, an American Revolutionary War general known as "The Swamp Fox". It encompasses an area of 576.04 sq mi with more than 39.4K people with a racial makeup including White, Native American, black or African American, Asian, Hispanic or Latino, Pacific Islander, and others along with about 16.6 K housing units and 11.4K families. Salem is the county seat. The entire Marion County is included in the Centralia Micropolitan Statistical Area.
